Jonathan J. Hull received the B.A. degree in computer science and statistics and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB). He is the Manager of the Multimedia Document Analysis group at the California Research Center of Ricoh Innovations, Inc. in Menlo Park, California. From 1987 to 1994 he was Research Assistant Professor (1987 - 1993) and Research Associate Professor (1993 - 1994) in the Department of Computer Science at SUNYAB as well as Associate Director of the Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR). His research interests include multimedia applications, document analysis, image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, and information retrieval.

Dr. Hull is a Fellow of the IAPR and a Member of the IEEE Computer Society and ACM. He's an Associate Editor of Computer Vision and Image Understanding. In the past, he's served as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition, and Pattern Recognition. From 1994 to 1998 he was as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. In 1997 he was named Outstanding Young Investigator at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition in Ulm, Germany.

He served as Program Chairman for Document Analysis of the Third Annual Symposium on Document Analysis and Information Retrieval in April, 1994. He was also co-chair of the Second IAPR Symposium on Document Analysis Systems in October 1996, co-chair of the 1996 and 1997 SPIE/IS&T Conferences on Document Recognition, co-chair of the Program Committee for the Fifth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition that was held in Bangalore, India, in September 1999, and co-chair of the Program Committee for the Sixth International Workshop on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition that was held in Taejon, Korea, in August 1998.

Recent Program Committee memberships include the 2005 IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision in Breckenridge, CO; the 2005 ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, Document Engineering Track in Santa Fe, New Mexico; the 2005 IAPR Int. Conf. on Document Analysis and Recognition in Seoul, Korea; the 2005 Int. Postgraduate Conf. on Pattern Analysis for Applications in Physical and Life Sciences in Bath, U.K.; the 2005 Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia in Christchurch, New Zealand; the 2nd Int. Conf. on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), 12/8-11/2008, in Tampa, Florida; and the 2009 IEEE Int. Conf. on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) in Barcelona, Spain.

Dr. Hull also co-edited (with Dr. Suzanne Taylor) Document Analysis Systems II that was published by World Scientific. To see the cover design click here. Quoting from the online advertisement: This book provides an overview of the state of the art in research and development of systems for document image analysis. Topics covered include a variety of systems and architectures for processing document images as well as methods for converting those images into formats that can be manipulated by a computer. The chapters are written by recognized experts in the field and describe Systems and Architectures, Recognition Techniques, Graphics Analysis, Document Image Retrieval, and World Wide Web Applications.
