Joint digital-optical design of imaging systems Recent developments in the design of complete imaging systems using a joint design framework have led to astonishing achievements in terms of reduced system size and cost, or extended depth of field of digital-optical imaging systems. Ricoh Innovations has developed a framework of designing the optical elements of an imaging system through an optimization that takes the optics, sensor characteristics, and image processing capabilities into account ( SPIE News article, July 2009).

Adaptation of documents to small-size displays Different displays such as those on mobile phones, on copier display panels, or on electronic book readers impose constraints on formatting options for documents that are available in paginated forms, such as pdf documents. In our work we focus on how to display document information on variable displays such that the information intended to communicate is perceivable, e.g. text readable, images and layout structure recognizable.

Restoration and enhancement of images using wavelet technologies Artifacts in digital images may different characteristics. In my work I analyze artifacts that originate from noise, aliased halftone patterns, or compression technologies, such as JPEG 2000.Technologies for artifact removal and image enhancement based on wavelet technologies are deloped. Our wavelet-based solution for denoising and sharpening of document images has been implemented in Ricoh copiers.
